The Pictou County sports scene has been buzzing recently with a number of exciting events and accomplishments.

In hockey, the Pictou County Crushers continue to dominate the Maritime Junior Hockey League. The team has won their last five games and currently sit in first place in the league with a record of 16-2-0. Captain Tyler Morrison has been leading the charge with 15 goals and 20 assists in 18 games.

In soccer, the Pictou County United U18 boys team had a successful tournament in Halifax, winning their division and finishing second overall in the competition. Striker Alex MacDougall was named the tournament MVP after scoring eight goals in six games.

In basketball, the Northumberland Regional High School girls team has been on a roll, winning their last eight games and improving their record to 11-1. Guard Emily MacLeod has been a key contributor, averaging 20 points per game and leading the team in assists.

In addition, several local athletes have been recognized for their achievements. Wrestler Tyler MacIntyre was named the male athlete of the month for November after winning a gold medal at the Nova Scotia provincial championships. Swimmer Julia MacIntyre was named the female athlete of the month for December after setting a new provincial record in the 100m freestyle.

It has been a great start to the sports season in Pictou County, and fans are excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for their favorite teams and athletes.
